Audi Hungaria continues bringing innovation into logistics, Magyar Suzuki receives state recognition, Salgglas develops smart windscreen system. Let’s recap what last week brought in Hungary’s automotive sector. Clicking on the highlighted items will open the full stories.

Digitalization and the application of advanced technologies are key elements in Audi Hungaria’s strategy. Currently, 65 automated guided vehicles are operating between production lines and logistical areas, for which the company has designed special “smart” junctions.

Seat’s sporty sister brand Cupra has unveiled three new electric models. The Terramar SUV – one of the models to be introduced in production by 2025 – will be a new entry in production at Audi Hungaria’s Győr-based plant.

Magyar Suzuki has received state recognition. According to Hungary’s foreign minister Péter Szijjártó, Suzuki has played an undeniable role in converting Hungary into one of Europe’s leading automotive industries. Osamu Suzuki, former-president of Suzuki Motors, was honoured with the civilian class of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary at Sándor Palace.

A cooperation agreement on the renewal and expansion of the Bosch dual education programme in Miskolc, originally launched ten years ago, was signed last week by two of the Bosch Group’s Miskolc-based sites and Miskolc Vocational Center.

A consortium led by Salgótarján-based Salgglas Zrt. has developed a smart windscreen system with a project at a total value of nearly HUF 1.5 billion and supported from Economy Development and Innovation Operational Programme (GINOP) funds, partnering up with the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME).

SZEnergy, the student team from Széchenyi István University of Győr, won the Shell Eco-marathon, held last week in Assen, the Netherlands. The Győr team has set a new world record by completing 284 kilometres with a single kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy, outperforming teams from such prestigious institutions as the universities of Munich, Toulouse and Milan.

New player set to enter the EV market. Vienna-based Olymp Cars will name its cars, to be built on their proprietary platform, after figures from Greek mythology. The first models will make their début in the spring of 2023.

The European Union has passed new regulation to curb carbon pollution. Electrification will be facilitated by banning the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines. EU citizens will only be able to purchase electric cars effective from 2035.

While accepting the decision, Germany’s minister of transport has criticized EU's the lack of support for biofuels in the transition. As for industry players, Volkswagen AG sees the EP’s decision as “a possibility to enforce”.
