The acquisition and operation of 25 hybrid buses, carried out from EU resources to a major extent, is unparalleled not just in Hungary but worldwide as well. The city’s own resources in the project only amount to 5 percent, meaning that the buses cost hardly 8 million HUF each to the city.

Between January and March 2014, 25 units of one of the most environment-friendly bus model families, the Mercedes-Benz Citaro G BlueTec-Hybrid, will arrive to Kecskemét, Hungary. The contract was signed by Gábor Zombor, Mayor of Kecskemét, and Ingo Fröhlich, CEO of EvoBus Hungária Kft., on 17 May. The acquisition of the buses, costing nearly 563,000 EUR each, is carried out from EU resources.

In the city’s new zero-emission zone, the Citaro G BlueTec-Hybrid can drive up to 10 kilometres using exclusively electric power without the help of the diesel engine. Four electric wheel hub motors which draw their power from lithium ion batteries provide the drive. Electric current is generated when the brakes are applied and, if required, can also be obtained via a generator which is driven by a small diesel engine.

So far, there are 62 Citaro G BlueTec-Hybrids are in operation worldwide, the largest fleet consisting of 12-15 vehicles.
