Hungarian automotive industry: week 47 2017 edition

The examples of SMP, SBS, Titán ‘94, Borsodi Műhely and private entrepreneur István Simon all show that it is indeed worth being an automotive supplier. Last week we have covered automotive investments worth hundreds of millions of forints.

Production line

Indian-owned SMP has recently inaugurated its new plant in Kecskemét, where the company will manufacture painted and coated bumpers and dashboard elements. Last week we paid a visit to the new factory.

Suppliers

Erdőtelek-based supplier of Caterpillar develops with a HUF 0.5 billion investment. SBS Kft. is a manufacturer of parts for heavy-duty vehicles, including earth-moving machinery.

Titán ‘94 Kft., a Budapest-based company in 100% Hungarian ownership, supplies Suzuki with 87 different parts and boasts an annual revenue of HUF 1.4 billion.

Each year, the company’s 4,000sqm pressing and welding plant, located near the M3 motorway, manufactures more than 8 million metal body panels.

Hungarian automotive supplier Borsodi Műhely Kft. shows us a true success story. The company, starting out as a one-person cutting business, has 220 employees in three different Hungarian towns, and is expecting a revenue of HUF 3 billion for the 2017 business year.

Kőszárhegy-based plastic processer develops with HUF 750 million investment. The capacity-expansion development project carried out by private entrepreneur István Simon mostly involves the purchase of new machinery.

Service providers

By the end of the year, Antenna Hungária will make its IoT (Internet of Things) network public nation-wide, which will operate with 100 stations across the country.

So far, the project has cost more than HUF 10 million, and the network will eventually cover the capital, county seats and several larger Hungarian towns. The first stage of the project was completed in spring 2017 in the Balaton region.

Austria-based OMV Group has announced to install electric charging stations at some of their Hungarian, Czech and Slovenian petrol stations.

The OMV petrol stations in the project will be fitted with electric fast chargers made by Ionity, the joint venture of Daimler, Ford and Volkswagen. The first electric charging station is expected to be finished early next year.

The Hungarian Trade Union Federation (MSZASZSZ) has compiled its expectations for parties running in the upcoming elections in a pamphlet called the “White Book”, including proposals regarding the work code and further pay rises.

The Swiss-Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and the Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency (HIPA) held the 2017 Swiss Business Day with the title Innovation and Talent, reflecting on current tendencies in Hungary’s economy.

Trend

A 300-kilometre autonomous test with autonomous vehicles was successfully conducted in Hungary last week.

The majority of the 190-mile trip from Nyíregyháza to Zsámbék was driven by the autopilot.

Education

In 2017, the Hungarian government launched a ten-year development programme to renovate educational institutions in order to ensure high-quality vocational training and preparing students to find their bearings in an increasingly fast-paced world in a 21st-century learning environment, the minister for National Economy said last week.

The programme will receive a HUF 10 billion budget allocation.

TechTogether

Student vehicle building teams operate just like small automotive businesses. They have cost issues, production tasks and capacity shortages.

We sat down with the leaders of 16 student teams to provide them with an opportunity to share their best practices.
