So far, BKV has purchased three vehicles manufactured in the so-called PKD (partially knocked down kit) construction, and has the option to buy an additional 15 vehicles. The completely new vehicles arrive from Magyar Autóbuszgyártó Kft. (Hungarian Bus Manufacturing Ltd.) in pieces and are assembled and finished at BKV's own workshop.

The advantage of this construction is firstly that the vehicles can be purchased for a lot less and secondly, those participating in production are enriched by experiences they can use during maintenance, and they also become familiar with the latest technologies, said BKV in a statement.

BKV received the parts for the first three vehicles in late-March. Since then, the company's carried out the paintwork and it also fitted the vehicles with windows, interior flooring, seats, handholds, the driver's cab and the electric wiring.

According to press reports, PKD-Ikarus buses cost HUF 52 million each. The PKD kit includes an American-made Cummins engine, an Allison transmission system manufactured in Szentgotthárd, a ZF bridge and plate glass from Orosháza. BKV provides the paintwork, battery and tyres for HUF 4 million per vehicle.
