Opel introduces new 1.6-litre diesel engine to Szengotthárd production line

In January 2016, Opel will start the serial production of a new 1.6-litre bi-turbo diesel engine in Szentgotthárd, Hungary. The first units have already emerged on the production floor.

Gábor Gerencsér, director responsible for new products at the Szentgotthárd plant, said the 160bhp diesel engine will make its debut in the new Astra Tourer in spring.

The engine will produce a peak torque of 350Nm at 1,500rpm. The Euro 6-compliant 1.6 CDTI Biturbo will take the Opel Astra Sports Tourer to a top speed of 218 km/h, and it will accelerate the car from 80–120km/h in just 8.1 seconds.

The biturbo power unit is produced on the same assembly line as the current diesel fitted with a BorgWarner turbo unit, with the only difference that the larger and heavier turbo is assembled on a separate preassembly line by two workers.

The 1,598 ccm displacement engine is fitted with a two-step turbo unit supplied by U.S.-based Honeywell.

The new engine was developed in-house by a team of General Motors engineers in Turin, Russelsheim and the US, and will be produced from the second quarter of this year alongside the new 1.6-litre petrol engine in Szentgotthard, Hungary.
