The first Hungarian-made midibus with a full-electric powertrain had been in development for 12 years by Inter Tan-ker Zrt. and not only is it more environment-friendly than its internal combustion-engined rivals but also more efficient to run. The vehicle is now used to transport passengers in Debrecen, Hungary.

"We already had a working vehicle ready for testing in 2010, which we tested in urban conditions for two entire years. The prototype covered thousands of kilometres under various loads. The launching process began in 2012 and finished in December last year.

"Following the procedure, the National Transport Authority qualified the vehicle, the first electric midibus developed and produced in Hungary, as roadworthy," Gábor Tenk, the CEO of Inter Tan-ker Zrt. told news site Dehir.

"The vehicle's charging point is located in Debrecen and currently the bus has a range of 300 kilometres, which makes it excellent for public transportation.

"Besides, the technology opens for us a wide range of new possibilities: we are only a few steps from converting other types of vehicles used in urban transportation to full-electric drive," added Tenk.
