The 30th Shell Eco-marathon race, an efficiency competition for alternative drive vehicles, was won by the French Microjoule-La Joliverie team, covering 3,312 kilometres with 1 litre of petrol in their prototype. In theory, the vehicle would be able to go around the Earth along the Equator using just 12.5 litres of petrol.

In second place there was another French team, beating the Hungarian team by a small margin with a performance of 2,187 km/l.

Kecskemét College's GAMF team, competing in the petrol category since 2010, received the Technological Innovation award from the jury for their vehicle built for this year. The prize awards the most innovative solutions and most unique developments. The Kecskemét team were the first to apply ceramic coating on the cylinder, while their car's cylinder head was made of titanium.

Although this third place is an excellent achievement, the Kecskemét team is capable of a better performance. Their record is 3,082 km/l, which they achieved in a different competition in Finland.

In the most popular segment, the petrol category, the team of Óbuda University finished in 23rd place covering 434 kilometres in their self-developed vehicle.

The electric prototype of the team of Kandó Kálmán Vocational Secondary School from Kecskemét finished in 16th place in their category with a performance of 433 km/kWh. The team's leading tutor said: "It's like going from Szeged to Bécs from only 30 forints (10 euro cents)".

The only secondary school team was given the Best Design award by the jury, which acknowledges the best, most unique design and excellent finish.

SZEnergy Team of Széchenyi István University from Győr finished in 4th place in their category with their concept car with a performance of 191 km/kWh.

The only hydrogen-fuelled vehicle from Hungary was developed by the Pollack Eco Team from Pécs, who bettered their previous performance by over 20 kilometres. This year, they covered 144 kilometres with 1 kWh energy, finishing in 7th position in their category.

The futuristic prototypes and road-legal concept cars had to complete ten laps on the test track in maximum 39 minutes. After that, they calculated the vehicles' consumption and how far the vehicles' would have got with 1 litre of petrol or 1 kWh energy.

Within the groups of prototype and road-legal vehicles, the teams could use six types of fuels in altogether 12 categories.
