BASF chooses Poland over Hungary

An EUR 160 million investment for the construction of a new chemical plant has been snatched by Poland. The decision to build the new plant in Poland and not Hungary had been made on the basis of better logistical conditions, said BASF Hungaria CEO Herbert Fisch.

BASF's new catalyst plant will be built in Krakow as the Polish location is closer to the company's German customers, said BASF Hungária Kft. CEO Herbert Fisch in connection with the EUR 160 million investment.

BASF says goodbye to the Hungarian banner. The Solymár-based plant will be closed later this year

Fisch said that the German group will close the Solymár-based Hungarian production site by the end of this year. He said it is not because the company's revenues are lower, but due to the company's plans to concentrate its production sites in Europe. A Swedish plant has been recently closed for the same reasons, he added.

BASF supplies each Hungarian OEMs and Fisch said that the increasing production of Hungarian plants was also visible in the company's order volumes.

The CEO said that chemical plants in general require a huge market and even the orders from the three OEMs were not sufficient to make it worthwhile for BASF to operate a separate plant in Hungary, and besides, a chemical factory never manufactures just one product but rather a range of related product families.
